With all kinds of information and misinformation out there, I went on the hunt for facts on artificial sweeteners. These sweeteners are tasting more and more like sugar, but are they good for me?
I have a friend who is allergic to most artificial sweeteners, and another friend whose daughter experienced seizures as a side effect of consuming an artificial sweetener on a regular basis in her beverages. By the time the girl was three, she wore a helmet to protect her head because of the regularity and severity of her seizures. It took some time to figure out that the artificial sweetener was the culprit. With that in mind, and my desire to lose weight, I went on the search for facts on artificial sweeteners and have come up with more questions. For one, are some artificial sweeteners safer than others?
This week I’ll delve into the different types of artificial sweeteners and even take a look to see if they can actually contribute to weight gain. That’s what I heard. Can you imagine! We’ll also take a look at dangers and side effects and how the results of earlier studies on saccharin have been overturned. The new studies claim that it is safe for us…in fact out of the five FDA approved non-nutritive sweeteners saccharin is often picked as the safest! And what about new sweeteners like Truvia?
With so many questions rattling around my brain, I figured there might be a slew of others out there wondering the same things. I’d love to hear what you all think. If you have any facts on artificial sweeteners that you’d like to share, please take a moment a leave a comment.
